How much life insurance do you need?

Use our calculator plus an explanation of the elements that go into the figure: how many years of income to replace, outstanding debts, education funding needs, and what coverage is already owned.

The standard approach is to calculate what your earnings would sustain and deduct existing protections. Exactness is not required: policies are purchased in increments, and what matters most is achieving an amount that maintains stability through your household's most vulnerable years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Calculation: (annual income × number of years) + total debts + education costs − existing coverage, then round to the nearest $5,000. This represents a reference point only, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Financial planners typically recommend replacing ten to twenty years of income; the right span depends on your dependents' ages and length of support needed. In Perris, families with young children frequently opt for the longer duration because major costs for care, housing, and school cluster in the same period.

Debts. For most households, a mortgage is the single largest obligation. Including sufficient coverage to eliminate it provides survivors with options rather than requiring them to sell due to inability to pay.

Education. A basic estimate per child in present-day dollars. Adding this to your plan now is simpler than purchasing an additional policy at a later date.

Existing coverage. Liquid savings available for use and any group-based policy obtained through your employer. Group policies typically terminate when employment ends, which is why many individuals include only a fraction in their calculations.

Once you have determined your target amount, the quote tool will display the monthly cost across carriers for terms spanning 10 through 30 years. Many people select coverage higher than their initial calculation because the added monthly cost is modest when you are younger.
