Health classes explained

Understand the meaning of each category—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—and what circumstances determine which class you fall into.

Term life premiums are set according to underwriting classification. While naming differs between carriers, the structure stays similar: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, and higher tiers for elevated-risk cases. Tobacco users occupy a separate tier structure with increased premiums.

What underwriters look at

Key factors include: body composition, blood pressure, lipid panel, cardiac and cancer history before age 60, vehicle record, medications used, job and pastimes, and any nicotine. The top tier requires virtually spotless marks on all factors; Preferred gives room for minor variations; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate well-controlled conditions like managed high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

Describe your health truthfully on the question: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Quotes use your selected tier; the carrier's review will set the true classification. When in doubt, request quotes for two classes, weigh them, and allow the formal process to decide. Overstating your health does not produce a lower final premium; it simply yields an inaccurate estimate.

Susman Insurance Agency will assist in identifying carriers whose underwriting standards are more favorable toward your health situation, a factor often more meaningful than the advertised premium.
